Lose the Training Wheels

Shaw Systems recently co-sponsored a multi-day Lose the Training Wheels’ camp hosted by the Richmond Hope Foundation.

Remember learning how to ride a bicycle? You were scared and excited, but after a few scrapes and minor mishaps you got the hang of it and reveled in the freedom a bike could provide. For individuals with disabilities, learning this skill can be extra challenging, but the Lose the Training Wheels (LTTW) program addresses those challenges.

Using adapted bicycles, LTTW participants attend 1 session each day for 5 consecutive days where they learn to ride while accompanied and encouraged by a volunteer “spotter.” Over the course of the five days the bikes are adjusted to challenge the riders as they gradually discover the skill and joy of riding.

The Richmond Hope Foundation, an organization that helps children get life-changing physical therapy services, hosted the camp August 13-17 at the University of Richmond. Shaw Systems became involved after learning about the program from employee Traci Northman-Kelly, whose husband Robert is a volunteer with the Foundation.
