Charity Spotlight: First Baptist Church of Richmond, Virginia

Shaw Systems is committed to community service and volunteerism. Shaw gives its employees one paid Charity Day per year to complete a charitable activity.

Charity Spotlight: First Baptist Church is working to bring the Kingdom of Heaven to Richmond, Virginia and beyond. One of our employees, Courtney, currently participates in several different volunteer programs through the church. She is active in all the following service missions:

Hanover Christian Firewood Ministries – Courtney’s family helps the church youth group prepare firewood for families in Hanover County that rely on firewood as their sole source of heat in the cold months. They volunteer a few times a year to help.

Charlotte Acres Incubator Farm – Courtney volunteers at an urban farm in Hanover that grows food for areas in Richmond that do not have access to fresh vegetables. She goes out once a week and plants, harvests, and maintains the garden that is provided by the church but farmed in cooperation with local farmers. Twice weekly during the spring, summer and fall growing seasons, fresh organic vegetables are harvested from the First Baptist Church plot and distributed to individuals and communities in Richmond that the church supports.

Mobile Market at St. Luke’s Village – Courtney also volunteers with the mobile market at her church. She goes with a team one Saturday a month to St. Luke’s Village (subsidized housing in the area) and they set up a store. They have regular customers that rely on the mobile market to by household items for just $0.25 cents each. Mobile grocery stores travel to areas known as food deserts and sells cleaning supplies and produce at discounts of 75-80%, allowing residents to use their limited resources more efficiently. Currently, this mobile grocery store ministry is a program going out three times a month to two different communities.
