Charity Spotlight: Powhatan Lions Club
Shaw Systems is committed to community service and volunteerism. Shaw gives its employees one paid Charity Day per year to complete a charitable activity.
Charity Spotlight: Powhatan Lions Club was founded in 1976 with 25 charter members and is celebrating its 47th anniversary this year. The focus of the club is to serve the people of Powhatan County and organizations representing the sight and hearing impaired. They are part of the Lions Club International, the largest civic organization in the world. The Lions motto is “We Serve!” Fun, fellowship, and voluntary service is what this club is about. They encourage service minded people to serve their community without personal or financial reward.
One of our employees, Gerry, currently participates in a couple of volunteer programs through the Lion’s Club. He is active in the following programs:
Powhatan VA Food Pantry Food Distribution Center
Gerry volunteers at the Powhatan VA Food Pantry Food Distribution Center in conjunction with the Powhatan Lions Club. Their specific task for the Food Pantry Food Distribution Center is to periodically collect donated grocery items from the two local Food Lion grocery stores, take it to the Distribution Center, weigh, sort, and assist with putting the grocery items on the store shelves.
Annual Powhatan Lions Club Steer Roast
The Steer Roast is one of three major fund-raising events each year that the Lions Club hosts. One hundred percent of the profits from this event are donated to various organizations within Powhatan to aid in their services to the community.
Gerry also enjoys volunteering his time for various activities at the Huguenot United Methodist Church.
