Charity Spotlight: Boy Scouts of America
Shaw Systems is committed to community service and volunteerism. Shaw gives its employees paid charity time to complete charitable activities.
Charity Spotlight: The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) provides the nation’s foremost youth program of character development and values-based leadership training. The Scouting organization is composed of approximately 2.2 million youth members between the ages of 5 and 21 and approximately 800,000 volunteers in local councils throughout the United States and its territories.
Aaron, one of our associates, volunteers as an Assistant Scoutmaster with Troop 2860, a local Boy Scout Troop that his teenage sons Gavin and Grant belong to. Troop 2860 was founded in 1988 with a group of six Scouts and has now grown to one of the largest troops in the state of Virginia. They operate under the principles of the BSA and leverage the Scout Oath and Scout Law to develop youth into the leaders of tomorrow.
Aaron is very involved with Scouts and generally leverages his charity day to volunteer with the organization. Over the years, he has volunteered to coordinate and oversee many trips and events for the troop that include volunteering at homeless shelters and food banks, community trash pickup, park maintenance, and recently a trip to the Whitewater Rafting Center in Charlotte, NC to teach youth watercraft safety. This year, Aaron is using his charity day to take a group of scouts to New York City to sightsee and learn about history. Some of the landmarks they plan to visit include the 9/11 Memorial and the Oculus, Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty, American Museum of Natural History, Coney Island, Times Square, and many more.
Aaron is always excited to share his recent experiences volunteering with the Boy Scouts of America. As a volunteer, he has the opportunity to work with an incredible group of young men and women, helping to guide them through various scouting activities and supporting them in their personal growth and development. One of his favorite things about volunteering with the Boy Scouts of America is the variety of activities that he gets to participate in. From hiking and camping to community service projects and leadership development programs, there is always something new and exciting to be a part of. Through his work with the Boy Scouts of America, he also has the opportunity to witness firsthand the positive impact that scouting can have on young people. He has seen scouts grow in confidence, leadership skills, and a sense of responsibility to their community and the world around them.
In addition to the personal fulfillment that comes from volunteering, he has also been able to develop his own skills and abilities through his work with the Boy Scouts of America. It has helped him hone his communication, organization, and leadership skills, and gain a deeper understanding of the importance of teamwork and collaboration. Overall, Aaron highly values his volunteer work with the BSA and describes it as incredibly rewarding and fulfilling. He is honored to have the opportunity to work with such a dedicated and passionate group of individuals that help make a positive impact on the lives of young people in the community.
