Employees Rally Together to Support Wounded Marine
Shaw Systems’ employees organized a benefit and raised $5,000 to help Jessy Medina, a wounded marine and the cousin of Jeronimo Pena, a Shaw employee. Jessy, the father of an infant son, is a 21-year old U. S. Marine who was injured while on duty in Afghanistan. Jessy lost one of his legs at the knee and suffered severe injuries to his hands and arms when he stepped on a land mine. He earned two purple hearts and was treated at the military hospital in San Antonio. His father Oscar took an unpaid leave from his job to help with his care. Jessy’s mother Patricia traveled to San Antonio on the weekends to see her son and help her husband.
The fundraiser was held in Houston on May 19, which was, appropriately enough, Armed Forces Day. A local business owner donated his restaurant as a place to hold the benefit. Shaw employees purchased and donated the food that was sold during the evening. Employees also worked hard to secure donated items, including a 32″ flat screen TV to be raffled off, and gift cards, handcrafted jewelry, and a night’s stay at a local hotel that were featured in a silent auction. A 50/50 raffle was also held, and that winner and the winner of the TV generously gave their winnings to Jessy. Sales of specially-made tee shirts (hand-stenciled with the phrase ‘Thank a Soldier’) also contributed to the overall donations. Cash donations from Shaw employees totaled almost $2,000.
